As I RIDE I enjoy good messages and this billboard had a good message about our land of opportunity —if one has ambition.
Well, I was headed in the direction of Harvard, which was ambitious for me. Now that I have less than a 1,000 miles left to travel I am daydreaming about

Many areas of the country have been experiencing a very wet August and for the next three days I too have had the opportunity to use my rain gear. The morning when I left Erie, it was dreary and wet. I stopped and turned around to take these pictures.
If we look, we can find something to brighten our day; even on a dismal day.
Biking on Route 5 along Lake Erie with its vineyards on both sides of the

The other day a gentleman asked how I rode in the “muck.” I finally realized he was talking about the hot humid weather. Well, today the temperature dropped and the humidity broke. It was a great day to ride! Now I had another problem. Which bike was I to ride? Just like ice cream, I had one of every flavor.

Hastings, MI to Mendon, MI –66 Miles
This morning before I started pedaling I went across the street and spent time with the Barry County Relay for Life; and, I was impressed! This is truly a county event with most businesses and civic organizations actively involved. Hastings is a town of 7,000 and Barry County has about 60,000 people. It looks like everyone will be involved and everyone is WELCOME!
They have lots of interesting laps and a number of people have signed up to walk for 24 hours straight.

I received the following e-mail from my friend Mette today.
“In the land of the Scandinavians! How lucky can you be? Please stuff yourself with Danish pastries and enjoy all the blond hair.”
I try to listen to her when she makes sense. How could I not follow this advice? So in the morning as I road down a country road I spotted this blond hair.
Mette said to enjoy, so I followed along with my camera in hand…

On this journey together, I think it is important to share the good days and bad days. Life can be a roller coaster with its ups and downs. I have waited a week to share some very sad news. Time is a good insulator, but there is no way to take the shock out of this news. As I rode today, my camera helped capture the message I want to tell.
In the June 16 blog, I mentioned three men who I met in Republic with whom I had dinner. A couple of days later I had the pleasure of riding with them. Two of the men were 71 years young and following their dreams to ride across our country. Eric was one of these men and his wife Elizabeth was driving a support vehicle.
A week ago Saturday when I was in East Glacier someone came up to me and said, “be careful tomorrow riding to Browning because of the hills and cross winds.” He said this morning there was a biker who had a serious injury and was taken to

Last night when I checked into the motel, the owner suggested I see the Missouri River and the local museum. I saw the river last night and as I headed out of town this morning I took a turn into the museum.
Just think. In less than a hundred years how fast our society has changed. From education to food choices to medicine to fashion to communications.
