By KURT BEGALKA

Bicyclist Bob Lee spins philosophical when it comes to his philanthropic goals.

“I’ve always realized I needed to do more,” said the 65-year-old Barrington resident. “What the bike ride taught me is you get more out of it than you put into it.”

Lee will speak and show slides from his record-breaking 6,500-mile solo charity bike ride 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at Meadow View Lodge. Tickets are $6.

Lee began his latest fundraising effort March 29, 2007 in Jacksonville, Fla. and continued north to Bar Harbor, Maine. He then flew to Washington state and rode across the country’s northern tier to Bar Harbor. He arrived Sept. 7. The trip spanned 130 days, 117 of those on a bicycle.

He averaged 54 miles a day, although he did travel 150 miles one day while crossing Montana, thanks to strong wind at his back. But Lee insisted it was the public push that made the most difference.

How do you make a pie chart of your life? If you were to determine the percentage of your time and effort spent on family, faith, community and business, how would it look? Would you be happy with it? Would giving to charitable causes fit in, too?

That’s a question Bob Lee, Enhance Your View, Barrington, IL, thought a lot about during 130 days he spent away from home last year. He was away on purpose; on a 6,500-mile bicycle ride across America. In March 2007, Lee set out from Jacksonville, FL, for three good reasons: to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society, the Les Turner ALS Foundation and the National Hospice Foundation.

Dear Bob,

On behalf of the National Hospice Foundation, thank you very much for making us one of the "3 Reasons" for which you pedaled over 6,500 miles last year.

Your check was a wonderful way to end 2007 and usher in the New Year. Congratulations — when you set out to celebrate a milestone birthday, you certainly do it in generous style. Doubling your original goal of $65,000 is just incredible!

As promised when we began this journey together in 2006, the funds you raised will support public awareness initiatives for hospice andd palliative care through NHPCO's Caring Connections. So as you hoped, more families will learn about the quality end-of-life care that hospice provides when comfort and compassion matter most.

Please accept this letter as a receipt for the $130,065 we received from Barrington Area Development Council.

Again, thank you for your enthusiastic support of the National Hospice Foundation — From Jacsonville to Bar Harbor to Barrington. We truly appreciate your generosity.

Best wishes for a happy. healthy 2008 filled with more reasons to ride!

Sincerely yours,
