Bicyclist Bob Lee spins philosophical when it comes to his philanthropic goals.
“I’ve always realized I needed to do more,” said the 65-year-old Barrington resident. “What the bike ride taught me is you get more out of it than you put into it.”
Lee will speak and show slides from his record-breaking 6,500-mile solo charity bike ride 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at Meadow View Lodge. Tickets are $6.
Lee began his latest fundraising effort March 29, 2007 in Jacksonville, Fla. and continued north to Bar Harbor, Maine. He then flew to Washington state and rode across the country’s northern tier to Bar Harbor. He arrived Sept. 7. The trip spanned 130 days, 117 of those on a bicycle.
He averaged 54 miles a day, although he did travel 150 miles one day while crossing Montana, thanks to strong wind at his back. But Lee insisted it was the public push that made the most difference.

This article appears in print and online the January 2008 issue of Drapery & Window Coverings magazine:
How do you make a pie chart of your life? If you were to determine the percentage of your time and effort spent on family, faith, community and business, how would it look? Would you be happy with it? Would giving to charitable causes fit in, too?
That’s a question Bob Lee, Enhance Your View, Barrington, IL, thought a lot about during 130 days he spent away from home last year. He was away on purpose; on a 6,500-mile bicycle ride across America. In March 2007, Lee set out from Jacksonville, FL, for three good reasons: to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society, the Les Turner ALS Foundation and the National Hospice Foundation.

From the Barrington Courier, December 2007:
By PATRICK BROMLEY, Staff Writer
Barrington resident Bob Lee had a dream, and he wanted to share it with the students at Barbara B. Rose Elementary School.
He came to the school, 61 W. Penny Road, on Dec. 11 to talk about his dreams during the “Ride for a Reason” assembly for students from kindergarten to third grade.
Lee, 65, spent the summer riding his bicycle 6,500 miles across the east coast and northwest part of the country. Dressed in his riding clothes and accompanied by his bicycle at the assembly, Lee described his trip to the young audience and the experiences he had along the way.
He also talked to the kids about his “three reasons” for riding, which were to raise money for cancer and ALS research, as well as to raise awareness for

The Three Reasons
Most importantly, this ride was started for some good reasons. Bob says, "Without the reasons and all the people helping, this would have just just be a long bike ride." It really is much more than that. Be sure to read about the 3 Reasons, ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), Cancer and Hospice Care. Then please look into making a donation to help fulfill the reasons for this ride.

An ABC Nightline segment featuring Aimee Chamernik and her family is scheduled to air this Tuesday, September 18. Aimee is a 37-year-old mother of three living with ALS and a good friend. Read another blog post from earlier in the ride, The Perfect Model for Living, about our visit with her. Here's What Aimee has to say about the Nightline interview:
"We are soooooo nervous! After about 20-30 hours of taping over the course of several different visits with the Nightline folks, we have no memory of what we actually said. And, of course, even if we did remember, nearly all of it ended up on the cutting-room floor. So we can only wait and hope that somewhere in all that footage, we said something semi-intelligent and managed to help advance our cause rather than harm it. If nothing else, at least we have cute kids, right?
"Anyway, above everything, we hope, hope, hope we make you proud."
We know you will, Aimee.

We will link to any video excerpts after the program when they are posted to the Nightline site.

On July 6 I received this e-mail.
Hi BOB,
They are making a LOT out of tomorrow being the seventh day of the seventh month of the (200)7th year. We hope it will be a fabulous time for you on the road.
Mette and Frank
Actually, my RIDE from Sibley to Fargo was just about 77 miles. Fabulous, I am not sure. Hot, yes. The evening news said it was 97° with a heat index well over 100 degrees. Why do I show 80 miles ridden? Well I had the opportunity to ride around town to the bike store and more importantly around the block for WDAY channel 6 to do some footage for the evening news. I guess it was my lucky day.
Usually, I am not up when the sun is getting up; but this morning was an exception since I knew I had a long hot ride and a treat at the end of the RIDE.
The sun is as pretty rising as it is setting. Why are people either morning people or night people. We probably should be more like the sun.
I don’t know for sure, but it looks like the American White Pelicans go for

After a great breakfast and before I left the Methow Valley Inn I saw Melissa picking and arranging flowers for the confirmation service at church.
As I said yesterday, Melissa and Terry are special people who you would like to get to know better. I gave Melissa a hug and we talked a moment about her cancer experience. She said a few things that gave me food for thought as I climbed Loup Loup Pass. The first thing she said was “I don’t want to miss the lesson.”
Yes, when someone like Melissa is told she has cancer, life does change and there are lessons to be learned. Melissa has her radiation treatments two and a half hours from home. So she stays in a cancer support center during the week and helps support and learn from others. There are lessons to be learned through everything we do,” Melissa said, “I want to learn from the experience.”

By Bob Lee Ride Date: April 2
Who turned back the calendar to April 1? It is April 3rd and I am still feeling like a fool. I wasn’t sure I would be able to finish the RIDE after the way the day started if. I almost lost my “cookies.” (Parents- you don’t have to censor this blog. Those who tuned in early on April 1st might get the meaning of this last sentence.)
Well, I am having a hard time keeping up with myself. So I am going to backtrack to April 2. The day started with a visit to The Glennville Sentinel. Glennville is The Home of the Sweet Onion. I was just 2 days late to see the Georgia Sweet Onion Pageant. I am sure being around all those onions would have made me cry. Mindy Adams who was crowned the queen looks really sweet. Really, she is beautiful.
I didn’t get out of town because everyone wanted to ride my bike.
