Marking Mile Number 6,500!
By Bob Lee Ride Date: September 6, 2007
Camden to Ellsworth, ME — 54 Miles
On my last visit to the Windward House, I met the owners Kristi and Jesse who were so nice to make a donation after my stay in the amount of the room charge. They also invited me to be their guest if I returned this fall. Well, here I was. It was good we could get the local media to cover the story of their generosity and the RIDE. See story in Camden Herald.
The last time I stayed here I photographed tulips. It was May 23. Now it is the dahlia season with a splash of morning glories.
Maine has a lot of craftsmen and I thought I would stop to see them making chairs. We not only talked about chairs but cancer. What’s the link? To me it seems cancer is linked to almost every person and every place I have been. In this case, the chair maker’s mom had cancer and the shop owner had just been diagnosed with cancer. As you think of those you know who have fought the battle, whether they have won or lost, I hope you will consider the matching fund opportunity we have until November 15, 2007. Isn’t great that we can double our contributions to help three causes!
As I continued to ride towards Ellsworth, the day turned from a cool cloudy day to a banner day.
I knew my cousins Bill and Linda Lee were planning on meeting me in Bar Harbor tomorrow night, but what a surprise to see them at the end of a long straight hill with a big outstretched banner.
I had been watching my odometer because today was the day. The day I would have traveled 6,500 miles. They had calculated where the spot would be and were within 2 tenths of a mile from the spot. They not only found the right spot, but they also found the right person to contact channel 5 TV from Bangor. What a way to cross a line! Thanks Bill and Linda for helping me celebrate. People ask how will the RIDE end? It didn’t stop when I bike 6,500 miles, it won’t stop when I reach Bar Harbor. Only the wheels stop for a while, but the fundraising and awareness must go on until we find the cures.
And this afternoon I still have 25 miles to ride to Ellsworth and the Holiday Inn.
I end this blog with a mailbox, because I would love to hear from each of you as to ideas and suggestions and action plans we all can take to capitalize on THE MATCHING CHALLENGE FUND of $65,000.
