The Beauty In Our Own Back Yard
By Bob Lee August 1, 2007
Barrington, IL - 18 miles
I miss sharing pictures with you from the road. What the last four months and 4,600 miles have taught me is there is beauty everywhere. Sometimes it is right in our own back yard.
This morning our 10-year-old grandson, Ryan, rode his bike over to our house. While we were walking around the yard, we followed the erratic flight of this butterfly.
The butterfly reminded me of a poem e-mailed to us not long ago. I would like to share it with you.
The following poem is often erroneously reported in e-mail messages to have been written by "a terminally ill young girl in a New York hospital." It was actually written by David Weatherford, a child psychologist. Still, It's very good and gives a lot to think about.
Slow Dance
By David L. WeatherfordHave you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round,
or listened to rain slapping the ground?Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight,
or gazed at the sun fading into the night? You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.Do you run through each day on the fly,
when you ask "How are you?", do you hear the reply? When the day is done, do you lie in your bed,
with the next hundred chores running through your head? You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last.Ever told your child, we'll do it tomorrow,
and in your haste, not see his sorrow?Ever lost touch, let a friendship die,
'cause you never had time to call and say hi?You better slow down, don't dance so fast,
time is short, the music won't last. When you run so fast to get somewhere,
you miss half the fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day,
it's like an unopened gift thrown away.Life isn't a race, so take it slower,
hear the music before your song is over.
While my torn leg muscle is mending, it is nice to take it slower. Late this afternoon I walked around the yard again, clicking shots. I thought I would share some of the beauty in our own back yard. If we would all slow down, really LOOK and LISTEN, life would take on a new meaning.
Look closely at some of the detail nature shares with us.
For the past two week I have been moving at a slower pace and the rest is paying off. On Sunday a doctor said I could start biking to see how my leg would react. So, I rode around the block. On Monday I rode 8 miles and today Anne and I rode a leisurely eighteen miles. I still have some soreness in my leg, but it is so much better than when I came home two weeks ago. After another consultation today I plan to get back on the road this coming Sunday or Monday. We still have about 1,900 miles to ride together. I am sorry to have this break in the RIDE and the blogging, but as the poem says, “Life is not a race.”
There may be more blogs before I ride, so check back in a few days.

You have a fab web page. I wish I could have riden with you 8/6, maybe from your house toward Racine, but stopping at the entrance to Fox Point. That would be enough for me. Share the fountain of youth with us when you get back... Please.
Ride safely.
