How Do You Like Them Apples?

Lockport to Rochester, NY – 67 Miles
Last night Jim Govola joined me for dinner. I saw his mom and sisters yesterday. It is nice to have the opportunity to keep in touch with work associates from the past.
Today I rode for at least 60 miles along the Erie Canal, which connects most of the major New York cities. The canal links Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and Albany to New York City. My first impression made me feel as if I was in Europe.
This was one of the major engineering feats of its time and the subject of some interesting folk songs. It was amazing to watch the boats enter and exit the locks.

Seeing this memorial was a reminder to appreciate each day, which I have been practicing.
If anyone is looking for a nice flat crushed gravel trail, look no further. Come ride with me.
Occasionally I would see a walker or biker, but many times I would ride for twenty minutes and see no one on the trail.
There were a few boats using the canal, some canoes paddling to get away from a shark, a dog (also paddling), a painter capturing the beauty of the canal and yes, the Canadian geese were enjoying New York.
Why is New York referred to as the BIG APPLE?
You don’t have to RIDE very far along the canal to get the answer. I wouldn’t want to be a doctor around here. The orchards cover the countryside for as far as one can see. They have started to pick, but most apples won’t be ripe for another two weeks.
There are also a lot of peaches being grown and being sold at all the local fruit stands
There are also many corn and bean fields.
The goldenrod reminds me that summer is coming to an end.
My day ended in a special way. When I was in Chautauqua, I met Dan Burkle who attended my talk on the RIDE. Dan said he lived on Lake Ontario in a suburb of Rochester and asked if I would like to stay with them. Joan and Dan built a wonderful home right on the lake. To hear the water lapping the shore and have this view makes their home a very special place.
Thanks Dan and Joan for your wonderful hospitality.
A few people have mentioned the power and beauty of Niagara Falls...
