Last night before going to dinner, I was talking to Anne and she suggested I have fish. Fish is not my favorite, but I always do what Anne says. Eating fish is tough for me, but choosing the type of fish to order is tougher yet. I stood there watching for just the right one to swim by. Then, to catch one is a whole different story. I felt like I was being watched when finally the waiter came by and suggested the Idaho trout that was on the menu. Good choice.
After dinner, I noticed the clouds were breaking up and I hoped for good riding weather tomorrow.
Recently I talked about the difficulty to get media attention. Well, today was a different story. I started the morning with a good live radio interview with a station in White Fish, Montana. I plan to be in White Fish on Thursday to meet again with the station. Then, before I left Sandpoint, I called the local paper and went by to have a picture taken and a short interview. It is certainly appreciated when people will help tell our story.
It was nice to curl up in my shell and sit out the rain yesterday. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer place to stay. If you are ever in the area, please stay at the Lodge at Sandpoint.
I wish it had been a sunny day to capture to beauty of this area. More impressive than the present beauty is to learn about the history of the area which was covered with glaciers 3 times bigger than the state of Rhode Island and as thick as 3,000 feet. As the glaciers receded, they left huge lakes that were up to 2,000 feet deep. When the ice dams broke, Idaho and Eastern Washington were reshaped. Can we learn from the past? If you look at the map that shows how the shoreline has changed with the melting of past glaciers, it is scary to think what global warming may do to the present shorelines.
We can always move to Hope or even East Hope, but I think something more proactive is called for.
The area has Black Bears, Moose and coyote, which I haven’t seen. It also has bobcats. I saw this one yesterday.
It has been fun to see the eagles, osprey and herons along the RIDE.
Today I met another cyclist from Brooklyn. He is riding 3,600 mile in honor of his mother who died from cancer. Ethan is 36 and just resigned from his computer job since he was feeling “trapped in a box.”
He is a writer and poet and hopes to make a life change.
Life leads us in different directions at different times. Listen to yourself. Dream, plan, use judgment, be passionate and find joy. Life can be short.
