Why You Riding The Bike? Nothing To Do?

By Bob Lee   Ride Date: April 5

Point South, SC to Walterboro, SC

I knew there wouldn’t be any hills today since I was riding through the “Low Country” of South Carolina.  Over the last day or two I would see signs for Beaufort and Hilton Head.  This morning I remembered that my spin instructor from the Advocate Good Shepherd Heath and Fitness Center was going to be at Hilton Head on her honeymoon.  Carol and her husband Val were married in January, but waited to the beginning of April to go on their honeymoon. Val had convinced Carol not to bring any “bikes” but he never said anything about a “biker.”  Carol helped spin me into shape for my 2001 ride, as well as this ride. She has always been so supportive.  Before I left she called one night and invited me to stay with them in Hilton Head, if I was in the area.  Now that’s a true friend!  Who wants to offend a friend?

01_20070405_123355_am_2So today I thought I would deviate from my route and join them for the last four days of their honeymoon. Well, lucky for Val, on my way out of town I stopped by a Southern Plantation and met a lovely lady named Peach Morrison. Yes, her name is Peach —a family name passed down through the generations. And she is not even from Georgia.  I took my helmet off and Peach showed me how to really spin.

I think we hit it off well since I wasn’t just a typical Yankee passing through town.  I, too, have a family name passed down. She was pretty impressed.

05_20070405_125108_am_3 She seems to be up on her history and was pointing our defense bunkers on the map behind us. I did get a little confused about which war she was talking about.  She kept referring to the WAR OF NORTHERN AGGRESSION.  Was that in your history books?  I guess it depends on where you live.

Some things are hard to put behind us.  I think they are still planning for another war.  They have trails all mapped out and evacuation plans, if the bunkers don’t hold this time around.

Just think what this Live Oak has seen in the last 250 years.

If you stay tuned to the web site, which I hope you will, you will have the opportunity to visit many fruit stands around the country.

Why you riding the bike?  Nothing to do?

         12_20070404_115208_pm 13_20070405_120909_am

I tried to take a video of the lady in the stand.  You would have loved the local color.  She asked, “Why you riding the bike? Nothing to do?”  When I told her I was riding to raise funds for cancer research she said, “Everyone around here has colon cancer.” Her brother and his 30-year-old son have colon cancer to name a few.  In addition, her mother had breast cancer.  Another quote I like was, “You are not going to die until your time.” She was referring to her brother who has outlived the doctor’s predictions.  Her movie star son then came to relieve her at the stand. Yes, Darol has been in nine movies including Something to Talk About, Forrest Gump, and The Patriot to name a few.  It seems a number of movies are filmed in the area.

Before I left I bought a bag of salted peanuts, but before I could purchase them I was asked,  “Do you have high blood pressure?”  When I said no, I was able to make my purchase.   It was also very special that Darol made a contribution to the ride.

After I left the stand I was on my ride through the “Low Country.” I am not sure why they posted to “crime watch zone.” I saw very few people.  Don’t worry and enjoy the ride.

At the end of the day I saw this “for sale” sign.

I hope no one along my route purchases these pups.  I stopped into this psychic to see if she knew for sure. What do you think she would have to say?

    Hi,
I hated the April Fools joke as I'm sure your entire family did! Not good. Also, I'm glad you passed up the Evacuation Route sign. You're a go-getter Bob! Go get em! Keep riding! Looks like and sounds like you are meeting alot of wonderful people! How cool!

    Hey BobBob,
Happy Easter! We will miss you this morning at the Fox Point Easter egg Hunt! I may have to take over your job as official photo taker. We have been following your journey daily, the kids fight over who gets to pull up your blog. We are so enjoying your pictures and journal! We have tried to post comments before but had technical difficulties, so hopefully this time is the charm. We are really tuned in to the geography aspect of it. They children are facinated that you have traveled so far so fast. They claim it takes us longer to drive to Wisconsin for vacation. We miss you and want you to be safe! We also loved the April Fool's day gag! It was a huge hit at the Reilly house. Continue pedling and we will continue to ride along with you. Have a wonderful Easter!
Love Mary, MArty, Kathleen, Patrick, John and Connor

Man!!!What a woose!!! All that camping gear, and you pull an overnight at Hilton Head! Ride safe, my friend. Looks like you're doing fine. The pictures are great, the commentary typical "Bob," and it's a joy to be part of your journey.
    Jim
