The Bee City Petting Zoo and Other Signs
By Bob Lee Ride date: April 6
Walterboro, SC to Moncks Corner, SC
Yesterday I started the morning off by meeting a woman named Peach —and she was a peach. I am glad this morning that I somehow missed seeing this girl.
As I pedal down the road, I take note of the street signs. Some of them encourage you to turn, others don’t, and some just do not make sense. What are Heavy Feathers? Does anyone know?
At times, I think our federal government should have a department just to police the accuracy of our street signs. You may not think it is necessary since you probably pass most signs at 50 MPH or greater. When I am in a car I usually cannot read the whole sign because I am a slow reader. However, on a bike I can be a slow reader because I am a slow biker. Now I have time to really read and think. And to think about what I read.
Anyway do you really think the little man made pond I just passed really is “the best fishing in the Country?” Or did I read it wrong? Did it say County? Maybe I need to pedal slower.
This sign had a sting to it. I did watch a number of cars turn down this dirt road to CDB. (You might not get that one- CDB = See The Bee.) What do you think a petting zoo is like in Bee City? Do you stroke the queen, pinch the drones, and pat the worker bees? The next time I do this ride, I am surely going to make an effort to see Bee City. If you get there before I do, look for the sign rather than listening for the buzz. There is a noise ordinance, you know! Sometime riding a bike raises more questions than answers.
Enjoy some of the scenes along the way from here to there.
See the man with my bike (below). I had him test ride the bike so we could work out a trade. Wouldn’t it be fun to finish the rest of the trip in a 1940 Ford? We were a little short in coming to terms, since he said his car is worth over $30,000. I met him outside of Duke’s BQ restaurant. I thought it was good, but now I am not sure if I had food or “scrap.”
These next two pictures have me confused. Was I there or wasn’t I? Sometimes pictures are as confusing as the signs.
For miles today, every house had a flag on display. Actually, in one yard a man stands 24/7 waving his flag.
About 4:30, I rode into Moncks corner looking for a place to sleep. I am glad they had some choices!
Today is Good Friday, so I want to share what I was told as a boy. I am not sure if there is any truth to it, but I think of it when I see a Dogwood tree. I was told that Christ was crucified on a cross-made from a Dogwood tree. After his death, no dogwood tree grew large enough to make another cross. And the Dogwood tree is to remind us of the crucifixion.
Most flowers have an odd number of petals. But look at the dogwood petal. It has four pedals in the shape of a cross. Look closer and you will see bloodstains at the tip of each petal.

Hi Bobbob how is your bike ride? I looked at all the pictures and they are beautiful. I think it is very nice to do this to help people with ALS.
From,
Lizzie

Oh Mom......your words bring tears to my eyes. Bob is truly a Great Human being and your words of his path being lined with with gold....HOW TRUE that is. Bob and his entire family will be ones truly honored by God! The love and time that they ALL share with others is just amazing. Rich and I are so grateful that they came into our lives. Ben is really taking a shine to Bob and wants to share so much with Bob. When they were together just before Bob headed out Ben wanted to let Bob know that he truly was Rich's son. He wanted Bob to be proud of him too. Ben and Julie are so proud of Bob and what he represents! Thank you Bob!

Happy Easter Dad!
I can't wait to hear about today's adventures. I am enjoying your blogs even more than I imagined - I check the computer first thing each morning for more from my travelling Dad. I envy the sights and sounds you are experiencing - there is nothing like seeing the backroads of our country. Look for some hidden eggs today! The kids are anxioulsy awaiting the egg hunt. I have trained Tom how to secretly "displace" the eggs from the kids' baskets and re-hide them - always one of your Easter specialities. And Ryan is in charge of the omelets this morning - we'll see if he follows in his grandfather's footsteps. We will miss your talent in the kitchen this morning, your practical "egg jokes" and warmth and love. Have a happy day!
We love you!

Hi again Bob! When you mentioned the scent of wisteria before you even saw it reminded me of my childhood also. Living with my grandmother introduced me to wisteria. She was housekeeper for a family in New Richmond, WI, and they also had a wrap-around porch with a porch swing at one end. As a 4-year-old, I would sit on that swing and smell the wisteria above my head. It was the best scent I had ever smelled and to this day, I wish I could have some around me all the time! God speed on a great trip, Bob! We'll keep posted and enjoy every word and pic you include! Most folks don't know that you are a true photographer by nature and create your own notecards!

Hi Bob: What a trip you've already had! And of course you bring on the tears as we remember the first time we met you and Anne. I think your visit to son-in-law Rich Crane was an impact that no one expected! I think his attitude to what his future days meant, both to him and all his family members, truly changed that day. Just for him to know that someone really knew what he was going through helped him help others via his computer! Thank you, Bob and Anne. You are the best of the best, and as you pedal along the byways, folks will see the real you! Loving, caring, giving, and last but not least, a true friend to our daughter, Lisa and her children, Ben and Julie. I know that with you and Anne close at hand at times when they (and she after his death)really needed someone to talk to about things "normal" people don't like to talk about!Don't worry about "when you go!" Your path is already lined with gold and the Good Lord will welcome you with banners! Thank you, Bob, for sharing your big heart with the world!
