Make It Count!
By Bob Lee Ride Date: April 12
Bald Head Island, NC To Wilmington, NC 32 Miles
There will be good days and there will be bad days. I have certainly had a string of good ones!
I slept well last night. Remember the picture of my bed at the Marsh Harbour Inn? Well I am a touchy-feely type of guy —and I loved these sheets. To me it is the sign of elegance.
I am a little hard of hearing and sometimes get things mixed up. On this, I have been confused most of my life, though. I slept well because of the sheets, so I asked the Innkeeper, "Pam, What are these sheets?” She said they are 400 Count Egyptian cotton. I wish my picture was clearer so you too could count my sheets. Why am I confused ? Growing up, I always thought if I was having trouble sleeping I was to count sheep. Now I know I should count my sheets – all 400 threads. 1, 2, 3, 4…
After gazing out my bedroom window, I went down to breakfast for some cheese quiche. How good can a day be? It is hard to beat this one after Pam presented me with my own bag of chocolate cookies. She is sweet and so are the cookies.
We both thought we would help to advertise what we care about.
After breakfast, I went to see Jeff Leonard, the Executive Director of Sales for Bald Head Island. Last night I met Jeff for dinner and learned that both of his parents died from cancer. Jeff introduced me to the manager of the dining room. His brother’s best friend just died of ALS —and his grandmother was recently diagnosed with ALS. This is reason to enough to pedal on.
Jeff was having a sales meeting this morning and offered me the opportunity to address the sales staff. What a job! Work on a pretty Island. Drive golf carts to work and offer people a wonderful lifestyle. And they call it WORK? We are hopeful other opportunities will develop from this encounter.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could just go the beach and find a cure?
Eventually I had to stop rocking and start rolling…
I guess I could have brought the whole family with just 2 more wheels.
I took a ferry from Southport to Fort Fisher and had the company of Neil Amato the sports editor from the STAR NEWS to ride with me towards Wilmington. Thanks Neil!

After I left Neil I was reminded of the importance of the RIDE. We talked of special people. Then I am reminded of people I never knew. Are you making the best of the rest of your life?
Later in the afternoon, Ryan Koresko from WECT (NBC) came out and gave some coverage on the evening news.

I then rode into Wilmington where the azalea festival is being held this weekend. What a nice town —and more nice people to meet. I wasn’t sure if I would stay in Wilmington but beds beyond were few and far between.
I had asked Neil if he had any recommendations for where to stay. He told me Richard, the owner of the Front Street Inn was a super nice guy. Some times reporters get facts mixed up, but he was right on about Richard —and his wife Polly and their son Chris. What a wonderful Inn located in the historical section of town. They following are some shots of the Front Street Inn (www.frontstreetinn.com). This morning Richard told me they lost their son to cancer just 6 years ago.
I then went to the riverfront for dinner...
...and to discover the secret why people are so sweet.
This is another one of those special places where I can go to bed to “count my sheets.” Thanks Rich, Polly, and Chris for your generosity and hospitality.

Well....maybe we found an answer to my last question. Perhaps Ryan Koresko could help find us someone in Tv land to help do a show on Bob. Hope so.
