Yulee, FL -- From Tears to Cheers!

    By Bob Lee

Yes, cheers with Gatorade and cheers from a number of the employees at Jacksonville’s Baptist Cancer Institute.  What a way to start the first day of many…

This start could never have been possible without the help and support of Bruce and Judy Homeyer.  If you will notice they are listed under the Yellow Jersey designation as a top donor; but just as important, was their involvement in making my first two days exceed expectations.  From meeting me at the airport with a pick up truck, helping to set up the bike, to a wonderful dinner and a comfy bed, to picking up supplies, to mapping out a bike route, to rallying the support of the community and encouraging WJXT TV to cover the story, it hard to thank them enough.

They are “sweet!”  Actually, Judy served a hot chocolate sauce last night over vanilla ice cream, which was the best I have had.  And now thanks to Judy’s generosity you can have some sweets.

    1/2 C light Karo syrup
    1 C half & half
    1 lb semi-sweet chocolate
Mix Karo and cream in a double boiler. Add chocolate and melt slowly.

Besides making a great chocolate sauce, Bruce and Judy are known in Jacksonville

as being  philanthropists.   Their support of the St. John's River, The Baptist Cancer Institute, etc is leaving an impact on the Jacksonville community.  When life gets whittled down to just a few simple words to place on a tombstone, I can’t think of many better than Philanthropist!

A thought for the day –What would you like on your tombstone?

The RIDE started out with the opportunity to visit with and thanks over 20 of the staff members of the Cancer Institute.  What a dedicated group there to help survivors become real SURVIVORS!  I told them the purpose of the RIDE was to put them out of work and not one complained. It was good to tell our story to WJXT TV.  If we can, we will place the coverage in the Press Section.

0720070329_120157_pm_customLate morning Bruce and Judy dropped me off at a ferry on the North side of the city and waved good-bye.

If you haven’t been on the northern coast of Florida, I would suggest it for your list of “Things To Do.” I am sharing some of the sites along the way and will comment on a few.

Amelia Island has a special place in our memory bank since we vacationed there about 30 years ago with Laura and Scott.  I took a little detour to visit a condo, which we almost purchased with some very good friends.  Unfortunately, Bob Knowlton lost his battle to cancer in his early 40’s.  Why do we let a husband and father be taken so quickly?

1920070329_013352_am_custom At first I didn’t see the purple wisteria but I knew it was present because of its fragrance similar to a gardenia.  I was raised in a 100-year-old farm home with a wrap around porch covered with wisteria.  They say the sense of smell is one of our strongest senses.  Boy, did it take me back “home” for a short while…

You might be wondering why I took a picture of bales of pine straw.  As I travel the country I am sure we will see differences in customs, practices, accents, architecture, etc.  Who is right or who is wrong?  Why do some people rake up pine needles and throw them away, while others bale the pine straw, in order to spread it around their yards.  Who is right and who is wrong?  Why are we always trying to be so judgmental?

Yes, we even eat different things.  Have you ever had hot boiled peanuts right out of the pot? Well, Terri was had been cooking some for 6 hours and was nice enough to share some for lunch.  She also gave me a “vine ripened” tomato and a Valencia orange.  What Southern hospitality!  Kyle asked, “What do I eat on my bike?”  Well, today is a good day to answer that question.

See the picture of the lemon water and apples?
This was taken at the Ritz Carlton on Amelia Island.  At times our best thoughts are hard for others to appreciate.  I stopped in to share my thought for the afternoon.  “Wouldn’t it be wonderful publicity for the Ritz to give Bob a complementary room?”  I thought is an ingenious idea, but soon I was on my way pedaling another 20 miles to my Comfort Inn.  I did get some of that ice-cold water…

    2820070329_012409_am_custom See the red Lexus?
Notice the white paper in the door?  Well, for my business, I leave an information package about window coverings on the doorknobs of any new homes I see.  I thought I would prospect the same way for A RIDE FOR 3 REASONS.  So while I ride, I will pass out information and hope for a new member of the team to come on board.  I always like to know if my prospecting pays off, so if you own that red Lexus, please let me know.

Question: Have you told someone new about www.3reasons.org?  Our goal is $500,000…

I think the last picture is a good way to end a great day.  I can’t say it better than that…

    Hi Bob:

A friend shared your website, and I've only read the first day's log. However, I have already become a dedicated reader. Because we live in the area you will be visiting in Lancaster County, PA. And since I'm also an avid rider, having ridden across the country in 1999, it would be great to ride along with you for a few miles. When do you expect to be in our area?
    Safe Riding, Don

We paused on our walk around Fox Point and talked with you for a few minutes on Sunday before you left town. Reading your posts along the way makes this a very personal experience for us. Both my parents and one of Carla's died of cancer. Keep up the great work.

Dear Bobob ijust got a e_mail eddres today. It sounds like you had a great ride today.Love Ryan and I will love you.

    Ryan Horak

As you rode North going over the bridge to Amelia Island, we passed you going South at the point you stopped to take pictures of the people fishing on the adjacent bridge.

    You have our admiration!!!

Best wishes for a safe, successful trip.

Nice to see some great photos from today--looking forward to seeing more as you travel up the coast. By the way, that's a nice looking jersey you had on today ;-)
